A short study of interview techniques in the wake of ABC’s Richard Glover’s record-breaking 24 hour interview with Peter Fiztsimons in 2011.
On December 11th, 2011, 702 ABC Radio National host Richard Glover interviewed writer and public figure Peter Fitzsimons over the course of a twenty-four hour continuous interview.
In this video, an ABC journalist and news presenter chats two the pair briefly following the completion of this momentous effort.
Surprisingly, the two were quite happy and animated whilst talking to the interviewer, despite spending the past day chatting non-stop.
As is the case with effective interviews, this interviewer adopts a conversational style, in which the interviewer poses open-ended questions based on her previous research and knowledge of the pair.
Commendably, the interviewer clearly appreciates the humour of her subjects, but understands her role in this context is to refrain from participating in the humour, but rather allow Glover and Fitzsimons to share what they have to say.
As this is a general ‘Human Interest’ news report, rather than hard-hitting investigating journalism, the interviewer has done a fine job of interviewing the subjects.
